A Look at Ruchira Kamboj’s Illustrious 37-Year Diplomatic Career Kamboj, a distinguished civil servant, was the All India women’s topper of the 1987 Civil Services batch and the topper of the 1987 Foreign Services batch. She formally assumed her role as Permanent Representative to the UN in New York on August 2, 2022. The first woman diplomat to occupy the prestigious position as the Ambassador of India at the UN, Kamboj – who had joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1987 – took to social media to bid goodbye. India’s first woman Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj retired after 35 years of service, during which she served as Indian envoy in Bhutan, South Africa and the UNESCO. Ruchira Kamboj (née Patni, born 3 May 1964 [citation needed]) is a retired Indian diplomat of 1987 batch of Indian Foreign Service who has served as the India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations from August 2022 to May 2024 until her retirement.
