Justice B.R. Gavai has authored and contributed to several landmark decisions of the Supreme Court of India. His judgments span a wide range of constitutional, criminal, and administrative matters. Justice BR Gavai has been sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India, becoming the first Buddhist and only the second Dalit to lead the nation’s judiciary. Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, commonly known as B.R. Gavai, is a distinguished name in the legal landscape of India. Born on 24th November 1960, in Amravati, Maharashtra. Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai became the 52nd Chief Justice of India on 14th May 2025. He is an experienced judge who has worked in the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court of India. He is the first Chief Justice from the Buddhist community and the second Dalit to hold this position.
