Jahangir, originally named Nur-ud-din Muhammad Salim (Prince Salim), was the eldest son of Emperor Akbar and his wife Mariam-Zamani. Jahangir was born in 1569 in Fatehpur Sikri and died in 1627 en route to Lahore. Mughal Emperor Jahangir was the son of Akbar. His earlier name was Nuruddin Muhammad Salim. His mother, Jodha Bai, was a Jaipur princess. He succeeded his father to the throne in 1605 A.D. The third and only surviving son of Emperor Akbar I (r. 1556–1605) and his consort Maryam uz-Zamani, Jahangir received comprehensive education, covering diverse subjects such as the Chagatai, Persian and Hindustani languages, military tactics, as well as social sciences. Legacy Among all his children, Jahangir was the only son who lived to inherit Akbar's throne. His reign marked a continuation of the policies and vision set forth by Akbar, ensuring the Mughal Empire's dominance in India.
