Ongoing research suggests that Aihole played an important role in the evolution of Indian temple architecture leading to Malaprabha river valley being designated as the “cradle of temple architecture in ancient India”. Between the 6 th – 8 th centuries, the early Chalukyas developed a cluster of monuments at Aihole that functioned as prototypes for the more evolved temples of Pattadakal and Badami. This process of experimenting with temple designs and structures was the first of its kind.
