The anterior cruciate ligament ( ACL ) is one of the key ligaments that help stabilize the knee joint. The ACL connects the thighbone (femur) to the shinbone (tibia). It's most commonly torn during sports that involve sudden stops and changes in direction — such as basketball, soccer, tennis and volleyball. ACL reconstruction surgery is a medical procedure designed to reconstruct a torn anterior cruciate ligament ( ACL ) in the knee. This surgical intervention is commonly performed to restore stability and function to the knee joint following an ACL injury. During the procedure, the damaged ligament is replaced with a graft, often taken from the patient's own body (autograft) or from a donor (allograft). The anterior cruciate ligament ( ACL ), is the weaker of two cruciate ligaments of the knee, the other being the posterior cruciate ligament.
