Loperamide Hydrochloride Capsules is contraindicated in pediatric patients less than 2 years of age (see CONTRAINDICATIONS). Avoid Loperamide Hydrochloride Capsules dosages higher than recommended in adults and pediatric patients 2 years of age and older due to the risk of serious cardiac adverse reactions (see DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION). To help deter misuse and abuse of OTC loperamide products, FDA has approved packaging changes for several tablet and capsule formulations of the drug (including Imodium brand-name products) that limit total loperamide hydrochloride content of the package to 48 mg and require use of single-dose (e.g., blister) packaging. Loperamide is an anti-diarrhoeal medication. It works by slowing down the contraction of the intestines thereby decreasing the speed at which the contents pass through it. This allows more time for reabsorption of fluids and nutrients, making the stools more solid and less frequent.
