Iltutmish, third and greatest Delhi sultan of the so-called Slave dynasty, best known for establishing a permanent Muslim capital in Delhi following the advances of his Ghurid predecessors. From there he strengthened and expanded the Muslim empire in northern India. Iltutmish was the real founder of the Delhi Sultanate, establishing Delhi as the capital and gaining recognition from the Abbasid Caliph. He expanded and consolidated the empire, introduced the iqta system, and built a strong administrative setup. Shams ud-Din Iltutmish was among the most important rulers of the slave dynasty. He was the slave who rose and earned the position of Sultan based on sheer merit. He captured the throne in 1211 after he dethroned and murdered the incapable ruler Aram Shah. Shamshuddin Iltutmish was a powerful ruler of the Delhi Sultanate in India during the 13th century. He was the third Sultan of Delhi and is considered one of the greatest rulers of the time, due to his military conquests, administrative reforms, and cultural achievements.
